As one of the largest membership organisations in the UK and the largest national students’ union in Europe, NUS has enormous potential to be a powerful campaigning organisation for students. For too long we have wasted that potential.

I am standing for National President to lead a new kind of NUS; one that campaigns and wins on the important issues affecting students in their day to day lives, one that develops and champions strong students’ unions and one that students in Further and Higher Education can be proud of - by putting power back in the hands of our membership and students’ interests ahead of petty politicking.

We face major challenges. The expansion of Further and Higher Education has delivered a more diverse student body, but too often our priorities fail to reflect that diversity, undermining our legitimacy and damaging our credibility as a representative movement. Student debt is at an all time high, courses are closing at an alarming rate and the marketisation of our education has failed to solve the funding crisis whilst exacerbating the inequalities and injustices already present at every level of our education system.

In the face of these challenges students have never needed a powerful national voice more than they do today. My record demonstrates my ability to transform NUS into the respected, influential and powerful National Union that students want - and need - it to be.
