About Wes
Wes is currently Vice-President (Education) of NUS, a position he has held since July 2006. As VP Education, he co-convenes the priority education funding campaign with the National President Gemma Tumelty, as well as coordinating NUS’ wider work on higher education issues.
Wes is currently a non-executive director of the Higher Education Academy and the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education. He is a member of the UK HE Sector Delivery Partnership on Admissions, the Quality Assurance Framework Review Group and the UK HE Sector High Level Policy Forum on Europe. Until recently, Wes was a member of the Burgess Steering Group on Measuring and Recording Student Achievement. He also represents NUS UK as a board member of the European Students’ Union (ESU).
Before taking up his current position as VP Education, Wes was a member of the NUS part-time Block of 12 and President of Cambridge University Students’ Union. The first person in his family to go the university, Wes studied History at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge. He first became involved as Ents Officer and then as President of his College students’ union, when he became actively involved in the fight against top-up fees and hasn’t stopped opposing fees since!
“Open and Honest About My Politics
I am standing as a Labour Students candidate in this election - as I have always done in NUS - because I believe candidates should be honest about their beliefs so that you can better hold us to account.
My record shows that whenever this government has attacked students’ interests, I have led our movement in fighting back. With your support, I will continue to do that.
I am politically active outside of NUS. Here are some organisations I am supporter or member of to give you an idea about what I stand for.”
